Adoption Policies
-
No 10-week old or younger kittens can be adopted by a family with a child 6 years of age or younger without that
child being present to be shown how very small kittens must be handled. (This rule is being enforced due to a few unfortunate
instances where cats and kittens were unintentionally injured due to improper handling.) -
No adoption of a cat or kitten will be approved if it is not the intent of the prospective owner to keep that pet
indoors. Nor will an adoption be approved to anyone who has an indoor/outdoor cat, even if he agrees not to let the new cat
out. Allowing a pet to roam freely outdoors puts it in extreme danger ... which could eventually be the cause for an early
and, most probably, a painful death.
-
An adopted kitten or puppy must be spayed or neutered by 6 months of age. If that is not done, Helping Paws has the
authority (and responsibility) to take back that animal.
-
No adoption will be approved into a home that already has dogs and/or cats that are not neutered or spayed.
-
No adoption will be approved to anyone who plans to 4-paw declaw a cat or kitten. Adoption may be allowed to those
who first say they are planning to 4-paw declaw and who, after hearing the explanation of how that may create negative
behavior and dangers, agree only to front paw declaw or not declaw at all.
-
Fenced yards are not a requirement for most dog adoptions. However, Helping Paws will require a fenced yard for
certain breeds or specific dogs; our staff makes this determination when a dog arrives at the shelter.
-
The individual who is responsible for the care and welfare of the animal being adopted must comply with all items
listed on the Adoption Form signed at the time of adoption. Be sure to read them carefully.
Please do not be personally offended by our policies. In addition, please do not argue with anyone at the shelter regarding
these policies. All shelter personnel and volunteer staff must follow the procedures set forth by the Board of Directors.
OUR PRIMARY CONCERN IS THE WELL BEING OF ALL OUR LOVING ANIMALS WHO HAVE BEEN ENTRUSTED TO US FOR THEIR CARE AND SAFETY.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR UNDERSTANDING.
