Helping Paws is a no-kill shelter serving McHenry County. We do take relinquished animals as space allows.

You may have special circumstances that require you to give up your pet. Please make sure that you have committed the time and energy to work with your pet before you give up your pet. Many issues can be resolved with the right information and we would be happy to guide you to resources that might help you to work through any issues with your pet. Make sure you have considered all of your alternatives to relinquishing your pet.

Please remember that area shelters are overflowing with incoming animals on a daily basis and can be a stressful environment for pets that are used to a home environment.

If you must relinquish your pet, please print and complete the form below and bring it to the shelter (without the animal to be relinquished).

HELPING PAWS ANIMAL SHELTER RELINQUISHMENT POLICY

1)     Please fill out the relinquishment questionnaire completely and return it to the shelter in person, by mail or fax (815-338-4406)

2)     We operate on a wait list and it will depend on what our rate of adoptions is currently.

3)      Our first priority is for animals in McHenry County.

4)     After reading your questionnaire, we will contact you if we want to schedule an appointment for a behavior assessment and heartworm test (if you have a dog).

5)     Filling out the questionnaire does not mean we will be able to take your animal.

6)     There are fees to relinquish your animal:

a.      $50 for mother and her kittens and/or puppies (mother must be FELV/FIV negative if feline and heartworm negative if canine).

b.      $50 for a litter of kittens or puppies.

c.      $50 if spayed/neutered, current rabies and distemper, current FELV/FIV negative test if feline.

d.      +$75 if already spayed/neutered but needs current vaccinations.

e.      $100 if not spayed/neutered and not current on vaccinations.

7)     We do expect that you will be able to supply current vet records before we would be able to accept your animal.

8)     We do not accept ‘walk ins’, so please do not bring your animal to the shelter without an appointment.

9)     The legal guardian of the animal must fill out the questionnaire.

10) We wish we could take every animal, but we are limited by the amount of space and staff we have to adequately take care of them.

*The relinquishment fee may be waived for individuals on public assistance or extenuating circumstances as determined by the shelter.

Helping Paws is funded solely through donations.  Please help us save the stray dogs and cats that come to us for help. A gift of any amount will help in the lives of these wonderful animals.
